Day 2: Shuttle & Canoe Transfer Lago Agrio to Cuyabeno Reserve  (L/D)

Today your shuttle from Quito arrives around 6-7 AM to Lago Agrio meeting point. You are free to have breakfast (not included) while you wait for your transfer to Cuyabeno Reserve at around 9:30 AM. Your transfer will be making a  stop (30 mins - 1 hour) at the airport at around 10AM to collect passengers that are arriving from Quito by plane before continuing towards the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve (approx. 3 hours with a 15-min break). A cold box lunch will be served upon arrival to El Puente, the entrance of the reserve.

After a 1-hour break, you will load your luggage onto a motorized canoe, meet your English-speaking naturalist guide and follow the winding Cuyabeno River for 2 to 4 hours until you reach your jungle lodge. During the canoe ride you will get a first look at the jungle and will be able to observe different kinds of birds. Our naturalist guide will give you information about the Reserve, important recommendations and other tips. You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the time and weather conditions. Upon arrival at the lodge, take some time to rest before leaving the camp for a swim in the lagoon and watching a beautiful sunset in the middle of the Laguna Grande. You will spend the night in bungalows with mosquito nets, to the night sounds of the jungle.

*About the Jungle Lodge: The lodge is located along the Cuyabeno river, 15 minutes down river from the amazing Laguna Grande. During their trip, passengers will have the chance to see a lot of wildlife as well as do tons of activities. The cabañas are built in a traditional, rustic style with thatched-roofs. All the cabañas are lighted naturally with candles to preserve the feeling of being in a remote jungle. Enjoy a cocktail at the bar in the two-story cabaña, or relax with a beer upstairs in the comfortable hammock lounge. Explore the small library with books about the flora and fauna of the Amazon Jungle. The lodge serves a mix of Ecuadorian and international cuisine. Experience rich, tasty plates, yucca (manioc) and other traditional foods of the rainforest, as well as lots of fresh veggies and fruits (especially great for vegetarians). You have the possibility to charge batteries for your cameras.

Day 3: Activities in the Jungle (B/L/D)

After breakfast you will take a hike in the primary forest for 3 to 4 hours, where your guide will explain to you how the complex tropical ecosystem works. You will be able to learn about medicinal plants and you might see some exotic birds or monkeys. After lunch, there is time for a siesta. In the afternoon you will have a swim in the lagoon and watch the sunset. With a little luck you can observe the pink river dolphins swimming or an anaconda sunbathing in a tree. After dinner you will take a night canoe ride to look for caimans.

Day 4: Activities in the Jungle (B/L/D)

After breakfast you will depart to the Siona Community of Puerto Bolivar, the largest ethnic group in the Reserve. It takes 1 hour navigation downstream to get there. Along the way it will be possible to admire the unique fauna of the Rio Cuyabeno such as: birds, monkeys, snakes, pink dolphins, tortoises and many others.

You will enjoy a full day excursion in the community with lunch included. You will take part in the elaboration of the casabe; local dish made of yucca (carbohydrates are the principal food of the community). A visit to the Shaman is also included. He will talk to you about life in the jungle. After that we return to the lodge to go for a nocturnal hike through the primary forest in search of insects, spiders, geckos, scorpions, and listen to the night sounds of the jungle. We will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

Day 5: Canoe & Shuttle Transfer to Quito via Lago Agrio & Quito Accommodation Drop-Off  (B/L)

Today there will be an optional early morning bird watching canoe ride at around 6 o’clock. Then, after breakfast around 9:30 AM, say goodbye to the jungle and take the motorized canoe to head back to the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve for lunch. After lunch you will be transferred back to Lago Agrio meeting point making a stop at the airport for passengers that wish to transfer to Quito by plane. You will be at Lago Agrio meeting point around 3PM and from here you will hop on board your transfer back to Quito meeting point, arriving there at night.
